The quick reference
10% — straight grid. A regular room, tiles running parallel to the walls. Cuts happen only at the edges, and many offcuts get reused on the opposite side.
15% — diagonal or large-format. Running tile at 45° means every edge tile needs an angled cut, and the offcuts rarely reuse. Large-format tile (12×24 and up) also earns 15%: fewer tiles per box means one broken tile is a bigger share of the material, and big tiles are likelier to need cuts around anything.
20% — herringbone, mosaics with borders, complicated rooms. Pattern matching multiplies cuts, and rooms with many corners, alcoves, islands or floor vents chew through material. When in doubt on a complex layout, quote 20% and explain why.
Natural stone: add a little more. Stone breaks more readily than porcelain and varies in shading, so a few sacrificial pieces per job is normal.
The math, so nobody's guessing
Material needed = floor area × (1 + waste factor), then round up to whole boxes. A 192 sq ft room at 10% waste needs 211.2 sq ft; at 15.5 sq ft per box that's 13.6 → 14 boxes. Our free tile calculator does this for any room and layout.
Why under-quoting waste costs you twice
First, the callback: the installer runs short, the customer returns for two more boxes — and if the new boxes come from a different dye lot, the shades may not match. Second, the margin: if your quoted price assumed exact coverage, the "one more box" conversation often ends with the store eating it. Quoting the covered area and the recommended purchase as two visible numbers protects both.
