What a dye lot actually is

Tile is fired in production runs. Between runs, tiny differences in raw material, glaze mix, kiln temperature and timing shift the color and sometimes the size (that's why tiles also carry a caliber). The manufacturer stamps each run with a lot (or "shade"/"batch") number on the box. Within a lot, tiles match; across lots, "the same tile" can read a shade warmer, cooler, lighter or darker — invisible in the stockroom, obvious across twelve square feet of floor.

What it costs to ignore

The classic failure: a job runs short, someone grabs two more boxes off the rack, and the patch reads differently in daylight. Now the store is negotiating over a finished floor — re-supply, labor for the redo, sometimes the whole room. One callback like that can erase the margin on ten good jobs, and the customer tells the story for years. This is also why quoting the right waste factor matters: the extra box you sell up front comes from the matching lot.

The habits of stores that never have this problem

Receive by lot. When a shipment lands, the lot number goes into the system with the quantity — not just "40 boxes of SKU 1042."

Sell by lot. A quote for 14 boxes should reserve 14 boxes of one lot. If no single lot covers the job, that's a conversation at quote time, not a surprise at delivery.

Advise the spare-box habit. Customers who keep a box from their lot can repair a cracked tile years later with a perfect match. It's good advice and it sells a box.

Watch mixed-lot leftovers. Three boxes of an old lot plus five of a new one is really two separate products. Price the tail end to move before it becomes dead stock.

Why this needs system support

On a spreadsheet, lot discipline depends on everyone remembering, always. In a POS with lot tracking built in, the lot is part of the inventory record — visible at quote time, allocated at sale, counted at receiving. The habit stops depending on memory, which is the only way habits survive a busy Saturday.
