How the math works
Tile is sold by the box, but rooms are measured in square feet — and cuts, breakage and pattern matching mean you always need more tile than the floor area. The formula:
Total tile needed = Length × Width × (1 + waste factor)
Boxes = total tile needed ÷ coverage per box, rounded up
Example: a 16 × 12 ft room is 192 sq ft. With a straight-grid layout (10% waste) you need 211.2 sq ft of tile. If a box covers 15.5 sq ft, that's 211.2 ÷ 15.5 = 13.6 → 14 boxes.
Which waste factor should you use?
Use 10% for a simple straight lay in a regular room, 15% when tiles run diagonally (every edge tile needs a 45° cut) or with large-format tile, and 20% for herringbone, mosaics with borders, or rooms with many corners and obstacles.
